With more U.S. children than ever being categorized as overweight or obese, parents (especially moms) must address the problem—if they’ll recognize it at all
It’s widely acknowledged that healthy habits start at home. So with about one-third of U.S. women (many of them mothers) overweight, is it any wonder that childhood obesity rates have hit epidemic proportions in the States? There are a growing number of programs aimed at children, including First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign, but some experts say that to really turn the tide of the nation’s growing weight problem, education and treatment programs need to be targeted at moms, too. It certainly doesn’t help that parents often don’t recognize when their children have weight problems, new studies reveal. But the advice is the same, no matter the age: Move more, eat less; though, as we all know, that’s often easier said than done—especially when modern culture has made it so easy to gain, so hard to lose. Can’t we make carrots the new comfort food?
