Go Go Power Rangers

Romey Louangvilay December 9th, 2010 No Comments

Here are two things to know about me: 1) I grew up social, and 2) I actually enjoyed “Power Rangers” (and still do!).
So when “Power Rangers” ended in December 2009, I was heartbroken—I’d been watching the show since its debut in 1993 (I was 7 at the time). I’ve been a fan through the cast changes, villain switches and power upgrades, and participated in the message boards to talk about rumors and recap the show. The show has been such [...]

Growing Up Social

Romey Louangvilay June 25th, 2010 5 Comments

As marketers work around the clock to leverage the newest social media platform, I can’t help but reflect on my first uses of social media. I’m a firm believer that you can’t evolve or grow without knowing your roots and learning from your past—and I realize now that in my past, I was engaged in social media before there was such a thing as “social media.”
It was about 13 years ago when I created my first site—a “Power Rangers” fan [...]

Mashable Media Summit: Content Myths, Personal Social Media and Mobile Growth

Romey Louangvilay June 10th, 2010 3 Comments

It’s Internet Week NYC! (Dates are officially June 7-14, 2010.) So of course I had to check out the Mashable Media Summit on Tues., June 8. The summit had amazing speakers, ranging from executives from Yahoo!, Motorola and foursquare to recognizable personalities like Dr. Sanjay Gupta and actor Edward Norton, who may be most famous for his role in Fight Club (“The first rule of Mashable Media Summit is you don’t talk about Mashable Media Summit”…wonder how many times he’s [...]

Transmedia: Storytelling Across Platforms

Romey Louangvilay March 18th, 2010 2 Comments

One of the things my first mentor and boss, Kitty Bundy, who is the director of lifestyle at Elite Model Management, told me was to tell a story in every project. As an intern then, I would assist with photo shoots, lookbooks and prepping models for go-sees, and Kitty would also ask me, “What is the story you’re trying to tell?” At first I didn’t understand what she meant, but I soon learned that she wanted me to help the [...]

It Can Be Easy Being Green

Romey Louangvilay March 17th, 2010 No Comments

It’s undeniable that more brands are catering to green causes. Car manufacturers are building hybrid cars, while other companies focus on how much carbon people produce.
At the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSW) this week, green programming and presentations are definitely popular. On Monday, Nita Rollins, a trendspotter for Resource Interactive, gave a presentation on Digital’s Emerging Role in Unconsumption, to help educate brands on how they can promote “unconsumption” (being green) in their practices. She says that “buy one, [...]

Twitter Introduces New App at SXSW

Romey Louangvilay March 17th, 2010 No Comments

I was looking forward to the Evan Williams keynote on Monday, March 15, at Austin’s South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSW). Williams, the CEO of Twitter and cofounder of Pyra Labs (creator of weblog-authoring software Blogger), was going to speak about the next generation of social media. I wasn’t alone. Multiple attendees were rushing to get a spot in the front row. This was the only session I attended where the room was filled and people were standing along the walls.
Moments [...]

Foursquare Comes Into Its Own

Romey Louangvilay March 15th, 2010 1 Comment

Foursquare, the growing location-based social networking game that allows users to “check in” at various venues, was plagued with reports of users getting robbed earlier this year. Mashable even did an article about it.
If there was anyone who doubted this social networking game would survive the backlash, they haven’t been to the South by Southwest Interactive Festival (SXSW). This year’s conference has only just begun, and Foursquare has a huge following here. The site experienced an extraordinary day yesterday as [...]

The Right Way to Draw Fashion Fans

Romey Louangvilay February 17th, 2010 No Comments

From designers and stylists to publicists and event managers, Fashion Week in New York is one of the most important platforms for fashion hopefuls. They all get a chance to make a name for themselves and obtain a following to help sell their designs or services. But like a good PR strategy, they’ve got to do it right.
Just because you’ve already got a presence online via social media doesn’t mean you’ll get results similar to your competitors. A brand can’t [...]

Fashion 2.0: Print Media vs. Bloggers

Romey Louangvilay January 21st, 2010 No Comments

In the world of high-end editorial fashion, print magazines are revered and respected for their wit, honesty and credibility—and probably the most highly so is Vogue, with Anna Wintour at the helm. But despite the editor’s and the magazine’s reputation, it couldn’t avoid editorial layoffs late last year. Vogue was just one among several Condé Nast publications that lost staff members (the company also folded Cookie and the stalwart Gourmet in 2009).
Still, the fashion industry is largely [...]

From Creating Stars to Exposing Flaws

Romey Louangvilay December 29th, 2009 1 Comment

Social media have helped corporations, retailers and small brands make a name for themselves and maintain sales during one of the toughest economic times ever. But it’s also had a significant impact on the entertainment industry, making unlikely stars and also highlighting flaws in some seemingly perfect icons.
YouTube is probably the best case study of how social media can create and deflate celebrity. Lonely Girl 15 was a realistic but fictional video docu-series that had everyone believing Lonely Girl’s life [...]
