Be a Source: A Call to Entries

Marian Salzman January 26th, 2011 No Comments

It has been a while since we’ve heard people talk about “the death of advertising.” A few years back, the birth of social media and interactive marketing had ad watchers sounding the death knell, but we now know that although advertising (and media in general) has changed, the ad biz has certainly not disappeared—and is not going to.
But what is emerging and shaking things up is a new creative class of people who might not necessarily work within our industry [...]

The Week in Social Media

Hillevi Lausten December 6th, 2010 No Comments

It is time for another Week in Social Media. As always, let’s start with some news from the world’s largest social network. Facebook now offers impressions and feedback stats to all admins. The Next Web has an article with suggestions on how to get the most out of it. Just one final, quick note on the social network behemoth: Facebook is actually trademarking “face,” if you can believe it. (Considering the omnipotence of the platform, we bet you can.)
And then [...]

Social Media—When It’s Time to Say ‘No’

Jonathan Welsh November 5th, 2010 No Comments

This article was originally published on the Drum.
Popular convention has it that every brand should now be harnessing the power of social media to help take over the world and become the latest YouTube sensation. Yet marketing and PR professionals are being faced with daily dilemmas about how to deliver social media campaigns for brands who are simply not suited to social media because they refuse to see it as more than a way to advertise at a captive audience.
As [...]

In the Old Days, You’d Have Described Us as Socially Inept

Matt Atkinson October 18th, 2010 No Comments

There always used to be a difference between the way us “Brits” travel and communicate. In many cases as we travelled the world, it wouldn’t have been unsurprising to hear us being described as reserved and somewhat closed in our approach to new people and cultures.
In fact, I can remember one such event in recent times, when I went on a training course in California and was asked to sit in a circle with a group of people I’d known [...]

Here we go again: “The Week in Social Media” with Baptiste Limb and me.
As with last week, let’s focus on customers in the first part of this blog post. Most times, customers are the target group for social media activities. And what do consumers want? This is one of the questions we have to face every day while working on social media projects. The title of the WebProNews post Consumers Want Brands to Interact with Facebook and Twitter, about a [...]

David on Demand in Cannes

Gabrielle Schaefer June 22nd, 2010 1 Comment

The golden ticket in the advertising world may just be the one to the prestigious Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, the “Oscars” of advertising. This year the festival runs from June 21 to 26.
Meet David Perez, a creative recruiter at Chicago advertising agency Leo Burnett. Not surprisingly, Perez was very much interested in attending Cannes, but unlikely to beat out those ahead of him at the agency for a spot.
He secured his place at this year’s 57th annual festival by [...]

Mashable Media Summit: Content Myths, Personal Social Media and Mobile Growth

Romey Louangvilay June 10th, 2010 3 Comments

It’s Internet Week NYC! (Dates are officially June 7-14, 2010.) So of course I had to check out the Mashable Media Summit on Tues., June 8. The summit had amazing speakers, ranging from executives from Yahoo!, Motorola and foursquare to recognizable personalities like Dr. Sanjay Gupta and actor Edward Norton, who may be most famous for his role in Fight Club (“The first rule of Mashable Media Summit is you don’t talk about Mashable Media Summit”…wonder how many times he’s [...]

The Week in Social Media

Baptiste Limb June 1st, 2010 No Comments

“The amount of media that’s available to the average user is a vastly larger superset than anything that’s ever existed in human history. If I was going to start a news business tomorrow, I would start a news business designed to produce not one new bit of news, but instead to aggregate news for individuals in ways that mattered to them.” —Clay Shirky
What is the Web today, and how do we best deal with thousands of billions pages, a huge [...]

“The path of social advancement is, and must be, strewn with broken friendships.” —H.G. Wells
Lots of people have serious concerns about their privacy on the Internet in light of Facebook’s new policy. I think it’s important to review the points of view of both the protesters and the defenders to have a good understanding of the situation:

“Is There Life After Facebook?” on the New York Times’ Bits blog

“In Defense of Facebook” on Mashable

At least for now, I believe the protesters [...]
