Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg could never be accused of resting on his laurels—the mogul’s empire is always looking for ways to improve

Since its inception, Facebook has been a rapidly (some may say constantly) evolving platform—and, as with all things Facebook, its alterations are often met with as much derision as acclaim. One recent innovation that should be appreciated by an online base that’s becoming more mobile by the day is Mark Zuckerberg & Co.’s new application that allows users [...]

Social Media Focus: Opportunities

Baptiste Limb October 11th, 2010 No Comments

“Therefore, having obtained the opportunity from these sources, I too began to consider the mobility of the earth.” —Nicolaus Copernicus (Polish astronomer, 1473–1543)
A lot of communication-related conferences and summits have happened the past few weeks around the world. None of them has avoided social media. I can even say that it was the main topic everywhere. Why? Simply because social media is mainstream, and with that comes greater opportunities.
Let’s understand those opportunities with five recent speeches by the most relevant speakers [...]

After one week of rest, it’s time to face again the latest facts and news in the social media world, illustrated with a collection of relevant links shared by Baptiste Limb and me.
Let’s first take a look on the European side. Royal Pingdom’s blog post “State of the Internet in Europe” impresses with interesting facts and figures: Europe has more than 475 million Internet users, which is almost one-quarter of the world’s Internet users, with Germany, Russia and the U.K. in the [...]

Time for more social media and Internet news! This time, we’ve got a mixture of links from Baptiste Limb and me.

Privacy setting, regulations, do’s and don’ts—they’re all things you normally don’t like to think about when talking about social media, because social media needs to be quick and efficient. But these topics are becoming more and more important to Internet [...]

The Week in Social Media

“Infinite growth of material consumption in a finite world is an impossibility.” –Ernst Friedrich Schumacher (economic thinker, 1911-1977)
What is totally new with the digital era is that we are freeing a part of ourselves from material consumption. I’m not saying that virtual consumption will replace its material counterpart, but it’s obvious that a part of what we used to do offline is now moving online, completely virtual—like news, music, books, videos, games, applications, virtual goods, etc. Losing a part of the contact [...]

Unlikely Allies
In the recovering economy, partnerships are being struck up in the oddest of places

Financial interests have made for interesting bedfellows since the beginning of time. (Remember Judas and the Romans? Unlikely business partners, certainly.) But in today’s tough economic climate, these surprising alliances are forming in every industry and market: on the tech front, there’s Google teaming up with VMware for cloud portability, which isn’t a universally trusted technology; in the auto industry, a new U.S. electric-car company [...]

The Week in Social Media

Baptiste Limb June 1st, 2010 No Comments

“The amount of media that’s available to the average user is a vastly larger superset than anything that’s ever existed in human history. If I was going to start a news business tomorrow, I would start a news business designed to produce not one new bit of news, but instead to aggregate news for individuals in ways that mattered to them.” —Clay Shirky
What is the Web today, and how do we best deal with thousands of billions pages, a huge [...]

The Week in Social Media

Baptiste Limb March 22nd, 2010 No Comments

A lot happened this week: Facebook became the most visited website in the U.S., surpassing Google; Twitter announced its At Platform; Foursquare is becoming a phenomenon, gaining 100,000 new users (I bet it will be 200,000 per week in no time). All this said, let’s take these facts and try to understand what’s happening on a larger scale. That’s what my links are about this week.

“Social Media Is Not About Conversations…It’s About Something Much More Amazing” on Silicon Valley Watcher

Marketing in a Reputation-Based Economy

Matt Balogh February 16th, 2010 1 Comment

Cred—short for street credit, slang for your reputation. Defined as “commanding a level of respect due to experience or knowledge.” Cred is traditionally associated with young, trendy people in urban areas. In Marketing 2.0, however, it’s a unit of exchange within the emerging reputation-based economy. Simple terms: more cred equals more value; more value equals more dedicated customers; more dedicated customers equals more money.
So, how’s your cred?
There are several different types of reputations on the Internet, each impacting and impacted by new media differently. Google, [...]
